Thank You For Smoking

17 04 2010

Genre: Comedy

The film isn’t exactly about smoking. In fact you won’t see anyone lighting up a cigarette in the whole movie. It’s more about personal choices, challenging authority and standing up for what you believe in. The film is full of arguments that, in my opinion, are valid.

Aaron Eckhart plays Nick Naylor (aka Ruby), the “bidang kontrabida”, a lobbyist for cigarettes. Almost everyone in the film hates him but you won’t be able to help rooting for him.

The film also stars Robert Duval, William H. Macy, Katie Holmes, Rob Lowe, J.K. Simmons, Cameron Bright, Maria Bello and David Koechner. Read the rest of this entry »

How to Train Your Dragon

11 04 2010

Genre: Animation

I’m not really into dragons. Maybe because every time I see Barney, I want to hit it with something really, really hard.

Anyways, the movie was waaaaaay better than I expected. Actually, I had no plans of watching it. But since some of my friends said it was good, I decided to take a chance and watch it and I have no regrets.

It’s a fun movie to watch.

I give it 4 stars. Read the rest of this entry »

Alice in Wonderland

28 03 2010

Genre: Adventure

I have always been a fan of bizarre, crazy, surreal films. I was excited to watch this film but got so disappointed. It wasn’t as powerful or as bizarre as I hoped it to be. There’s something lacking in the film that I can’t quite put my finger on. There was no connection for me. Watching two birds fighting is much more engaging than this film.

To be honest, the only thing I enjoyed watching in the film is the Red Queen (played by Helena Bonham Carter). She was funny and endearing. The White Queen (played by Anne Hathaway) was scary for me. She’s supposed to look angelic and kind but something about her make-up made her look nasty and old. I expected a lot from Johnny Depp but somehow he didn’t deliver, just like the director, Tim Burton.

Such a shame.

I give it 2 tumbling stars. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s Complicated

25 02 2010

Genre: Comedy

It’s a simple story about the complications of love and divorce.

Meryl Streep was hilarious as always. I love the scene where she got stoned. It was so funny!

It was refreshing to see Steve Martin play someone… normal. LOL! He plays the architect/new love interest while Alec Baldwin plays the horny ex-husband.

There were a few confusing scenes/loop holes in the story but I still enjoyed watching it.

I give it 3 big stars!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

6 02 2010

Genre: Animation

This is probably the best Doomsday film ever! I mean, what do films like Independence Day, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Day the Earth Caught Fire (yes, there is such a film) or even 2012 have that could beat a Spaghetti hurricane? Or a leftover avalanche? Or a meatball shower? Or a gigantic hotdog storm! LOL! Nothing could beat that!

Moral of the story: Too much food is bad for your health (lol).

It’s a fun movie to watch.

I give it 3 and a half falling stars (with a chance of Sisig and a flash flood of beer)!

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

6 02 2010

Genre: Fantasy/Adventure

This is Heath Ledger’s last film. His portrayal of the Joker is still the best for me. I enjoyed his performance here as well but it was kinda Casanova-ish (his 2005 movie), but on drugs. I loved the idea of him being replaced by 3 very good (and good-looking) actors: Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell. All four of them in one movie (swoon)!

This film is all about choices, choices, and more choices. Enough to make you crazy (like the film).

I love it!

I give it 4 handsome stars (and another swoon moment).

I Love You Goodbye

3 01 2010

Category: Movies
Genre: Drama

If Panday was a let down, I Love You Goodbye was even more disappointing! I mean, I kinda expected Panday to suck (I hoped it didn’t, but it did). But after watching this movie, my initial reaction was: HA?!

I get the story. I even accepted the Gabby Conception-Angelica Panganiban tandem (even if it’s icky)! But why?! Why Ms. Laurice Guillen? Why? Why is the word CONTRIVED written all over the film? Is it to be different? To make the story unpredictable? Everything was just so… unbelievable.

In my opinion, the film failed miserably.

I give it 1.5 stars.

Ang Panday

3 01 2010

Category: Movies
Genre: Action/Adventure

I’m a big fan of Panday movies. So when I saw the trailer, I said to myself: Wow! I’m going to watch it!

Unfortunately, as expected, it was crap. The cinematography was ugly. The editing was bad. Most, if not all of the costumes are bad ripoffs. The script/story was awful. The acting was laughable. And what the hell was that make-up? Philip Salvador, didn’t look mean or scary. He just looked like an ugly clown. I mean, I can’t think of anything good to say about the film except for the good visual effects. Such a waste. SUCH A WASTE! Read the rest of this entry »
